Ingredients

Scale

For the Beef:

  • 1 lb flank steak (thinly sliced)
  • ¼ cup cornstarch
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil

For the Sauce:

  • ½ cup low-sodium soy sauce
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • ¼ cup beef broth
  • 1 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 1 tbsp fresh ginger (minced)
  • 3 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch + 2 tbsp water (for thickening)

For the Noodles & Garnish:

  • 8 oz lo mein or rice noodles
  • 2 green onions (chopped)
  • 1 tsp sesame seeds
  • 1 tsp sesame oil (optional, for extra flavor)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Beef: Toss thinly sliced beef with cornstarch and let it sit for 10 minutes.
  2. Cook the Beef: Heat oil in a wok or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook beef in batches for 2-3 minutes per side until crispy. Set aside.
  3. Make the Sauce: In the same pan, sauté garlic and ginger until fragrant. Add soy sauce, brown sugar, beef broth, hoisin sauce, and red pepper flakes. Simmer for 2 minutes.
  4. Thicken the Sauce: Stir in cornstarch slurry (cornstarch mixed with water) and cook until the sauce thickens.
  5. Combine Everything: Add cooked beef back to the pan, tossing to coat in the sauce. Stir in cooked noodles and mix well.
  6. Garnish & Serve: Sprinkle with green onions, sesame seeds, and a drizzle of sesame oil. Serve hot!

Notes

  • For a gluten-free version, use tamari instead of soy sauce and rice noodles instead of lo mein.
  • Swap beef for chicken or tofu for a different protein option.
  • Adjust sweetness and spice to taste by modifying brown sugar and red pepper flakes.
